The Staffroom

What is the Staffroom?

The Staffroom is a support community for anyone who works in education, from head teachers to classroom teachers, heads of department to teaching assistants. For £3 a month, you have access to a private Facebook group where you can connect with others, chat about life in school, support each other and celebrate each others’ successes. You can also join a WhatsApp group if you are comfortable sharing your phone number. We have a monthly Zoom chat where you can check in, catch up, vent, celebrate and generally get to know other like-minded people. There are also regular webinars with experts in the field of wellbeing in education where you can learn about issues such as workload, gratitude, health, fitness and lots of other things to help you maintain a good work-life balance.

Why have you set up this community?

I love working with teachers, and through my language courses for MFL teachers, I have had the chance to chat to lots of lovely teachers from all over the country. Quite often during our lessons, we have a general chat about life in school and remote learning, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic. I have come to realise that this is an invaluable part of the courses, as people love to hear how others are doing things in other schools. I realised that not everyone wants or needs to learn/improve a language, but there are plenty of teachers who would benefit from these kind of chats. So, I had the idea of setting up a community for education staff from a wider range of backgrounds!

Why isn’t it free?

Research (and my own experience) shows that when you pay for something, you are much more likely to engage with it. I decided that I don’t want a massive Facebook group with hundreds or thousands of people who don’t interract with the community. I would much prefer to have a smaller group who feel like they can openly talk about their struggles and celebrate their successes, and to ultimately feel like they are making new friends. I personally am a member of a paid community like this for mums and have found it invaluable.

Also, I pay the webinar speakers for their time, which I think is pretty important!

Why don’t I get a discount for paying for a year upfront?

I listened to an excellent podcast about diversity and inclusion recently that pointed out that when you offer a discount for people who can afford to pay a lump sum, you are actually disadvantaging people who can’t afford to, or prefer to have a monthly budget. So, it’s £3 a month or £36 a year!
